This is my first attempt at a blog. Believe it or not, it took me several hours to get to this point. Please be patient; i am trying to get a regular (old-fashioned print media) newsletter finished in the next couple of weeks. Then i should start actively blogging.
I also will put a little fire under the webmaster of the mattolehistory.org site. The registration was allowed to expire, but we still have the domain name, and it should be up and running again soon.
Meantime, if you are interested in joining the Mattole Valley Historical Society–which is not only a wonderfully generous thing to do, but gets you the twice-annual newsletter Now… and Then– please comment here with your information; or contact me at mattolehistory@frontiernet.net; or mail MVHS, PO Box 144, Petrolia, CA 95558; or call 707-601-7300. If you like your first newsletter, i hope you will be sending us a check for $20, or whatever you can afford, as annual dues. Thank you!
How exciting! I’m looking forward to reading your blog and
maybe meeting you some day. I’m from the Curless/Wright
families.
Dear Lynn,
Thank you for your comment. Where is the Curless/Wright connection? Which of the Wrights married which Curless? I have looked at a bit of Wright family genealogy, but not much Curless. If you have anything you would like to put up here, you can email it to me and i can post it.
There might be a more direct way, but i haven’t figured it out yet. The email is mattolehistory@frontiernet.net
I hope to meet you someday as well!
I am not aware of a Curless/Wright connection other than Curly and Grampa Guy were friends and told great stories (and Grampa’s great grandfather was Wright Curless from Blocksburg). Please let me know if there is more family history out there in the Mattole…
Thank you, John… your family name does come up once in a while. I had not heard of a connection between the families before Lynn, above, mentioned it. Did you click the button to get email notifications of follow-up comments? If so, you will know if i post anything more here on this topic, or if i try to get in touch with you if anything Curless comes up.
Hello Laura, I saw the photo of the Merrifield family – and I wanted to know where it was obtained as it was one of my personal collections – my mother is in the photo and the information is incorrect. Felicia Hodge
Thank you, Felicia. I looked back at the Native Images post and saw that indeed, i made a big mistake–there’s no way that picture could be of the earlier Merrifield family, as it was probably taken 1915-1920. It would be May Merrifield (b. 1889) and her husband, wouldn’t it? I have various emails from helpful people regarding Simeon Logan, also mentioning Truman Nelson. I would like to hear your (correct) info before re-labelling the photo! By the way, i was provided the picture by the Humboldt Room at HSU. However, other people have copies of it. (Merrifield descendants Timothy Lucas–from Rhoda Merrifield and Pepperwood postmaster Wm. Lucas–and Joel Merrifield, Sr., from Everett Merrifield, Sr.–have asked about the picture.)
Looking good!
Delighted to find your great blog Laura,
