Very early Petrolia photograph
December 3, 2010 by Laura Cooskey
As always, click on the image to blow it up. I apologize for the lack of clarity, but this is as good as it got. The building on the right was the Hunter store in this view to the southwest. It stood about where the present Petrolia Store is now. To its left, the corner saloon. I am not sure who owned the saloon at that point. It’s interesting to see all the trees beyond, and the little bit of the house across the street– probably O’Leary’s place.
Brenda Shrider is Walker Hunter’s direct descendant. I was delighted that she shared this picture with our Historical Society, as the single 19th-century view we’d had previously seemed to be the only one anyone could find– that was the late-1860s picture of it with the “John Rudolph” sign over the door. The Petrolia Store has gone through many owners, but has always been in roughly the same place. Just to the north, or right in this view, of the old store was where the wider, wood-frame Hart & Johnson store was built in the first decade of the 20th century–that’s the one that burned down in the 1992 earthquake. We’ve never been able to pin down exactly when that structure was built, but perhaps it was after the 1906 earthquake. The original building pictured here lasted alongside the newer store, as a storage warehouse, into the 1940s.
